Tickets for Teachers was born in Durham, NC, out of a simple observation: empty seats are a missed opportunity. Founded by Matt Sears—a former high school math teacher and school board member in Durham—the initiative launched to support the staff of Durham Public Schools.

Whenever Matt saw empty seats at theaters, concerts, or sporting events, he couldn’t help but think: Why not give those seats to the hardworking teachers and school staff in our community? That’s exactly what we do. Tickets for Teachers creates a win-win by providing a seamless way for venues and local fans to donate their unused tickets to educators—even right before the curtain rises or the whistle blows!

We believe every community has untapped “ticket capital.” Matt’s goal is to bring Tickets for Teachers to any school, district, or town that wants to transform empty seats into well-deserved nights out for their school staff.
